Cybercriminal in belgian court...For the first time since the application of the new Belgian legalisalation around cyber crime, a computer hacker had to appear in court. In January 2002 he has tried in vain to attack the webservers of EUREGIO.NET in three sessions and tried over 16.000 times to crack the masterpassword of the webserver. Belgian legislation states that even if the attack is not successfull, the fact of trying to commit computer fraude is sentenced with the same penalties as successfull attacks.
The man, who runs a small webdesign company is considered to be a competitor of euregio.net. He pleaded guilty. The general attorney demands 5 months in prison and 1000 euro penalty or as an alternative, 100 hours of work for the community. euregio.net as a civil party claims 5650 euro for damages and publication of the sentence.
Courts decision will be announced December 15th, 2003 in Eupen, Belgium.
